In a similar vein....

I'm trying to use a PIC18F4520 (came with the kit) to convert a 2 channel, optical encoder signal into an Analog tachometer to replace the broken tach I have on an old servo motor for use with a cnc machine.

Lurking through these forums I have managed to build up code to calculate my rpm (only watching 1 channel for CCP) and output an 8bit voltage using portD and an R/2RLadder. However, since my rpm range is 0-2400rpm, I would like a little better resolution.

I was considering using two ports to output a 16bit value. However, I think I read someone's comment regarding the ports being unable to open simultaneously. I imagine there is a short delay, but I was wondering if someone has dealt with using multiple ports to increase output resolution?
